The museum collects and restores vintage CPR passenger "train sets" as well as Business Cars, Cars of State, Royal Cars and Interpretive cars currently at 16 but increasing to 26 in 2008-2009. The new museum facilities include the 2007 Heritage Award winning "Royal Alexandra Hall", formerley the original oak panneled cafe from the former CPR "Royal Alexandra Hotel" of Winnipeg Manitoba (1906). and the Cranbrook Freight Shed (1898)
The museum is open year round and offers walking guided tours for visitors. Other facilities include Gift Shop, Library and Archives.
